Solder 60/40

The most common Solder alloys used for soldering leaded Glass and Tiffany (copper foil technique) is solder 60/40 and 50/50. Solder 60/40 is an alloy (mixture) of 60% tin (Sn) and 40% lead (Pb) and is recommended by us, for soldering Leaded Glass and Tiffany (copper foil technique). But why 60/40?

  • Since 60/40 has a lower melting point (183-191 ºC) related to 50/50. When soldering Lead profiles, the risk of burning through the lead profile is less using 60/40, with copper foil, the risk of burning of the adhesive layer (at the back of the foil) is less.

  • Since 60/40 solders are harder / stronger, compared to 50/50. This gives a stronger body of the leaded glass and Tiffany objects.

Obviously, it is also important that you have a soldering iron with a sufficient heat output capacity. In addition, the shape of the soldering tip can also be of importance. The Weller Profikit 100 and 200 with the possibility to choose several different shaped soldering tips are good examples of this. The soldering tip temperature of the Profikit 100 and 200, is controlled automatically, depending on the pin number 6 or 7, which is printed in the back in the soldering tip.
